Overlooking the River Exe it is surprising this boozer hasn't been gentrified into a gastro pub .It still retains a two room interior both served from a central bar.The north section has a pool table as it's centre piece with wooden furniture around the periphery and a large, dark alcove at the back which I suppose could be used as a stage ,but on my visit just has some sofas. The otherside has a seating area down a step with quite a bit of pine furniture,a wooden floor and sparse wall coverings but good views over the Exe,there a benches outside which will be popular in good weather.A rowing club inhabits a connected building at the far end of this side.
The bar was serving a standard mix of multinational keg crap and had one functional handpump delivering a very good pint of Dartmoor Legend (NBSS 4).Food was unavailable due to an issue with the kitchen.
If there had been more ale options a higher score would have been awarded, there was a friendly welcome and no doubt the regulars are well catered for.Not enough to place on a crawl list however.

A waterside pub on the edge of the city, accessed along the canal path or down a steep lane behind St Leonard's church. It is a long narrow building, with a further long narrow extension containing the dining area. In the original building is a plain public bar, with the more upmarket other side including a carvery. The decor is fairly nondescript but not unpleasant and there is a large benched area outside overlooking the water. At least the ales on were interesting, with Exeter Lighterman and Ferryman, and Powderkeg Speak Easy.
