A renovated village pub trying to be a gastro, aimed primarily at the upper echelons of the tourist population. It is in a very pleasant up-market village adjacent to Barrington Court. The two front rooms have been made open plan, though they are still demarcated as a dining room and saloon by virtue of how they are furnished. It’s open and airy, has a very pleasant atmosphere and feels clean and efficient. Dogs and children are welcomed though the landlady did seem a bit grumpy about the presence of both. Food is good and comes in decent sized portions. There were several civilised families eating, but no evidence of local regulars, the only people not part of the ‘National Trust Set’ were us with our wet, muddy dogs (perhaps that’s why the landlady was grumpy). No real cider on, just Thatcher’s Haze, but there were two ales on draught, Exmoor Ale and Tribute, both in good condition but served too cold. Definitely worth a visit for food or a quick pint – maybe tie in with a pint in the nearby Duke of York - and it looks like a really good place to B&B.

Now freed from the tyranny of Punch taverns the village pub has been reintroduced to Barrington. Quite a smart pub internally with a comfortable bar with sofas and a fire. The other side lends itself a more austere restaurant atmosphere. Three real ales on, Trelawny from St Austal, one from Goffs and Stout Hearted from Yeovil Ales. Fingers crossed the villagers will support their local and passing trade picks up - the new owners are certainly putting the effort in.
