Wow! how a pub can change from the last couple of reviews. Three people in here on our Thursday afternoon visit and they didn't stay too long. Six handpumps serving 3 ales, Peakstone Pugin's Gold, Jaipur and Woodforde's Reedlighter. Three ciders Gwynt Y Ddraig Happy Daze, Lilley's Mango and Thistly Cross Whisky Cask, which were served from boxes on the back bar. We went for the Woodfordes and the barman or landlord was welcoming and did pour some beer off the handpump before serving us, whilst he was supping pints of Stella on draught. Things were very untidy around the place and all the drinking glasses and crisps were kept along the front bar counter. Pink and blue slush puppy machines were happily churning away on the back bar, most probably waiting for the arrival of some hyperactive kids.
The worst thing about the place was the condition of both the gents and ladies toilets, unfit for use in my opinion.

The bar was fairly busy for my Tuesday afternoon visit - the pub opens at 4pm weekdays - possibly influenced by the fact that seven out of the 12 beers available were on offer at just £2 a pint. I assume this is to clear out the slower sellers from the weekend before they go off, but the three different beers I tried were all in good condition still. I didn't make a note of all the beers available, but two that I drank (Pynot Porter and Staveley Cross) were from local Townes Brewery, which I was informed is going to be closing soon. The third beer that I had was from Falstaff and was not really to my taste, having a little too much of the tropical fruit salad about it.

Alan's description of the pub is accurate as far as the premises are concerned, but I reckon it's about half a mile from the centre of Clay Cross, and although I'm a pretty quick walker I would allow 10 minutes rather than five to walk here. Or there's the 54 bus which runs along Market Street and has a frequent service from Chesterfield, the nearest railway station. Definitely worth the trip out here, I'd say.

The Rykneld Turnpike is a fairly new pub to Clay Cross that is housed in the old Egstow Family club building.
The pub is about 5 mins walk from the middle of Clay Cross.
Once inside there was a decent sized L shaped room with the bar facing, the room was bare boarded and had chunky wood tables and leather chairs to the left and church pews and leather settees to the right.
There were 12 pumps on the bar and all in use,i had a drink of Alton Nemesis which was well kept and refreshing on a very hot day,the other beers i noted were Abbeydale Deception,Titanic mild,Great Heck Yakima,Thornbridge Jaipur,Ossett Challenger mild,Raw Dark Peak stout and Maxim Steady Away, there were other beers which i did not note, the landlord said there was a selection of craft keg beers which i have no interest in at all, there was also a good choice of single malt whiskies.
This was a pleasant enough pub with a great choice of beers on the bar,it was a shame that there were only about 6 other customers in on my Saturday afternoon visit.
