The Lord Nelson is an L-shaped pub with set tables in a dining area to the front and a bar area to the rear with a counter up the left that faces a few high tables to the right. Steps behind these tables ascend to a raised lounge area with sofas and a dartboard. Muted Sky Sports cricket was on the televisions while some background music played during a recent Wednesday afternoon visit. Premium keg was available alongside three hand pumps that were drawing Butcombe Original, Atlantic Pale and Proper Job. The service was polite and I enjoyed sitting up in the lounge while my ancient phone charged for a bit, worth a look.

A decent well run pub, dating from 1822. The interior consisted of the bar area facing you as you enter, and positioned along the back wall. There was a raised section on the right hand side with wall mounted TV showing some sport.
There was a large lounge area on the left hand side with an exposed timber truss roof. A large mural of the ship 'The Lord Nelson'out at sea was displayed down the right hand wall. This area was mainly set out for dining and the majority of the customers were having lunch. Three pumps serving Proper Job, Butcombe Original, and Dartmoor Jail Ale.

My husband an I ate here last month. We are from the US. I ordered the lamb shank, and my husband the "Americano Burger." When I told the waitress that we were American, she told the chef, and he got nervous. He had no need to be nervous. Although we have been back in the US for a month, my husband is still raving about the Americano burger he had at the Nelson. HE said it was the BEST burger he ever had. My lamb shank was amazing, as well, simmered all day in an amazing sauce, tender, savory. Our waitress offered fabulous service, and the Chef at the Nelson is to be highly commended. I give the Nelson the highest rating, all the way from the USA! Linda Forsberg, and my husband Ted Gibbons
