Tucked away in a residential side street, but nonetheless just a short stroll uphill from the quayside, this looks as thought it may be owned by the local Exter Brewery going on the available beer selection.

It has an unusual curved frontage and once inside there was also a curved wooden bar counter. Décor wise it’s quite traditional with old wooden boards on the floor, a deep salmon colour paintwork on much of the walls and mustard colour paint on the ceiling. Seating was a mixture of fitted benches around the perimeter, regular tables and chairs and a few stools around the bar counter. A small brick fireplace was off to one side, whilst a few pieces of artwork were dotted around including some unusual caricature style portraits. A room at the rear was a little more sombre in style with dark grey paintwork, whilst a shelf included some books, an old telephone and a stuffed badger in a glass display case.

Beers on tap were all from the Exeter Brewery and consisted of Ferryman, ‘fraidNot, Lighterman, Darkness, Avocet and County Best. The solitary cider meanwhile was Sandford Orchard’s Devon Red. Overall, a pretty decent little pub and well worth tracking down.

A charming pub a steep walk from the riverside, the exterior curve in noteworthy as it sits on a road junction.Inside is even better, this used to be the smallest pub in Exeter before the adjoining house was purchased and knocked through to produce the Back Bar which is a dining section but with very good artwork on the walls.
The original pub has an island bar in dark wood, you can circumnavigate the bar to find seating consisting of traditional tables and around the back a charming small table and stools built in the staircase space with Real Ale Ray and Fiona mentioned positively in their review below.
There is a taxidermy stoat in a glass cage, some brass plaques for departed regulars, artwork and notices about forthcoming quizes and vinyl nights. It's an authentic pub ,an interior of note.
Owned by Exter Brewery and operating as a tap for their produce meant on my trip a selection on handpump of their Darkness,Fall's Over,Lighterman,'fraid Not (NBSS 4),Ferryman and Avocet while there were several taps featuring Exeter kegged beers.
A must visit when in Exeter,it's rightly 2026 GBG listed and has a greater Exeter Brewery ale range than the Brewery Tap near St Davids station. If I lived locally this would be my regular,a great pub ,friendly welcome and a fine example of a community boozer.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Hour Glass Inn

We really liked this pub for its originality and quirkiness, especially the paintings around the walls and a tiny table and bench seat squashed under a staircase around the back of the bar. The ladies toilet door was so small that when the door was opened a chunk of the door was cut away in the shape of the top of the toilet bowl, according to Mrs Ale. The staff and locals were laid back and their beers were all in excellent condition. All the beers were from Exeter Brewery; Darkness, Lighterman, 'fraid Not, Ferryman and Avocet.
