The Hampton was the busiest of the five pubs in the Hampton area that I visited on a recent midweek late afternoon / early evening, which wasn’t surprising because it’s a Brewers Fayre pub that sits adjacent to a large Premier Inn. The rear of the pub is for dining and there was a queue of people at the entrance waiting to be seated. I did gain access to this split-level seating area the following morning for a lacklustre Premier Inn breakfast. Some of the plates and cutlery were clean and one of the two coffee machines was working properly, and most of the breakfast items were available. The front of the pub is a bar area with high tables, a children’s toy grab machine and a television on the right-hand wall that was airing muted TNT Sports while some non-descript background music played. Available from the bar was a selection of premium lagers alongside Doom Bar and Atlantic Pale on keg, there’s no cask here. The service was exceptionality slow with a single untrained barman who was also taking food orders. I’ve never seen a barman take a three-drink order to then pour the two lagers first and the Guinness last, and then stand there staring at the Guinness for 30 seconds while it settled before topping it up while four or five other people waiting to be served. I decided enough was enough when I looked up for my pint to see three young children standing at the bar in their pyjamas. It was an early night and a lesson to never let anyone book my work trip hotel for me again.
