The Angel is an independent privately run free house that was built in 1888 to commemorate the jubilee of Queen Victoria. It was originally a one roomed structure but in 2004 was gutted and a full renovation took place including a mezzanine floor.
The view from outside strongly indicates that this was an old Church conversion, but in fact quite the opposite as it was built as a men only club which continued until 2004.
Called in around noon and was quite impressed with the layout, decor and the staircase.Already there were around 20 customers in mainly consisting of ladies of a certain age enjoying the friendly and homely surroundings. There was quite a few casks to go at (albeit one was Doombar)and is certainly worth a visit if in the area.
The place has a couple of interesting features one is a 8ft Angel placed on top of the doorway and the other is the bar and back fittings which were purchased from Central TV studios and had been used in the Crossroads television programme.
