An easy place to miss. A short set of stairs straight off the street leads to a small single room bar. It is elevated from the road level but not a whole floor up. Supposedly it is the Island’s smallest pub. On my visit there were six casks of ale stacked up behind the bar. I had a pint of Goddards South Island Pale Ale (£4.95) which was a reasonable, if slightly under hopped beer in good condition (NBSS 3). The cheerful and talkative barman was holding court with a small group of locals at the bar and the remaining customers were scattered around on informal seating. The closeness of the seats makes it easy to strike up conversation if that is what you want. Despite being a small place it is well lit and airy. Lots of local prints and ephemera cover the walls. If you are drinking real ale in Newport you shouldn’t really miss this pub. Highly recommended.

Not quite a micro, but as near as dammit. A one roomer with 3 casks on stillage behind the tiny bar and a few interesting (mainly European) keg taps. The walls are covered in pumpclips and various breweriana and it generally oozes atmosphere. The ales on this visit were Ossett Excelcius, Mr Grundy's Big Willie and Rudgate Viking - perhaps all a bit golden but otherwise fine. A definite must to visit.
