E TA left this review about Ostler Inn
An 18th Century village inn in what was once a thriving small town, which now seems to be stuck in a bit of a time warp. The pub was substantially renovated a couple of years ago, saved from oblivion by the current owners and transformed into a successful business. There is a small outside area at the back which is mainly used for smoking and vaping, but as it fronts onto the main road through the village, there is no organic car park. The downstairs rooms at the front, which occupy what seems to be two earlier houses, have been partially conjoined to form a single open space, though it is still divided into separate areas. You enter through the main public bar at the right hand end of the building. This has the bar counter, a pool table, dart board and a large TV screen. Turning left, there is a seating and dining area which contains a second TV and a piano, and another area is reached down some steps. There are wooden floors throughout which echo. There are plenty of wooden high chairs stacked in one corner, suggesting that it is popular with families at meal times, though when we visited there were only a few locals in, making it feel a bit like Last of the Summer Wine, only with deep Somerset accents. Two ales on, Jail Ale and Otter Elf, both in good condition, plus a range of keg including Devon Mist cider and Thatcher’s Haze as the only cider options. Prices were about average for the area. It’s off the beaten track and I wouldn’t make an especial effort to come here, but if you’re in the area it’s worth dropping in.
