Second Visit 26/11/22:
After my aborted attempt at visiting this pub 4 weeks ago, I returned on a Saturday evening to find a busy, food-led establishment. In fact, I appeared to take the last seat in the house that was available to me.
The pub has a single room, with almost all tables reserved for diners. A single table near the entrance seemed to be for drinkers. This was occupied by 4 youngsters, leaving me with a solitary seat next to a radiatior on the other side of the door. This is certainly a cosy place.
Hancock's HB is the regular beer here. This was accompanied by a couple of Glamorgan beers - Cwrw Gorslas & Jemima's Pitchfork. Having not managed to find any real cider throughout the day, I opted for a keg cider from Glamorgan, simply called Apples. This had to make do but was at least one I'd never tried before.
Toilets for both men and women can be found opposite and outside, just across the lane from the pub itself. They were clean.
Original Visit 30/10/22:
My visit here yesterday led me to believe that it would be one of those days, where careful checking of opening times would not be sufficient to make a successful pub crawl. I hadn't been able to find any opening times on their website, which seems more interested in detailing the local area, whilst they are not listed on their Facebook page or Google listings either. Instead, I had relied on Whatpub, which turned out to be completely wrong. In fact, revisiting the website, I can see that clicking on the pint symbol reveals that the pub is only open during the evening and closes completely on a Sunday.
I discovered my planning faux-pas by turning up at the front door and seeing the opening times listed on a piece of paper. Sunday does seem to be a strange day to close though, considering other pubs in Rhayader were doing a roaring trade. Now I know the opening times, I'll try again soon!
