The Church House has a grand stone staired entrance from where the impressive chapel like tile floored bar area that sits under an arched roof with stained glass segments can be accessed to the left. The serving counter runs up the left-hand wall where premium keg is available alongside Carling and two hand pumps that were drawing Wainwright Amber and Gold during a recent midweek visit when the other customers tended to be young families. There’s a laminate floored seating area to the front and more laminate runs up the right, opposite the counter, where some yellow banquettes sit under an impressive marble columned gallery that is lined with Romanesque statues of scantily clad ladies. At the rear five or so steps climb to a raised laminate floored seating area where accessed can be gained to a patio garden out the back. This place is certainly worth a look for the architecture and décor, but the extremely slow music was tiresome and the Estrella line needed a clean. Now that I’ve been I don’t plan on returning.

A wildcard, with no PuG listing and we also managed to gate-crash a wedding party. According to the pub website, this was a former church hall for St Pauls church over the road and was renovated to its current use in 1997. The interior has a deliberately ecclesiastical feel with a very attractive dark wooden, almost gothic, bar back. There’s also a lovely concave ceiling with frosted glass. There are some Wetherspoon-esque booths downstairs, with a small raised seating area to the left leading onto a patio. Two ales available, Doom Bar and Hooky Bitter. I tried the Hooky Bitter which really wasn't up to much and came in a Kronenberg glass. They make a big noise about their food being freshly-prepared and locally sourced. Downstairs has damp and badly maintained toilets – odd, considering so much time and effort has been expended upstairs.
If impressive interiors are your sort of thing, give this one a go.
