A lovely looking exterior. Inside is dog leg shaped. There's an area as you enter for drinking, though there aren't many tables to enable this (though the bay window was a good seat). The larger room round the dog leg is set for formal dining. Rear grassed garden behind. Mustard and green shades for décor. Noted a large wall-mounted chalk board with more food options than seemed feasible outside of an industrial scale kitchen, perhaps they employ a team of trained octopi chefs? Two ales, both West Berks - Chubbs and a first-of-the-day GOB. Over-familiar upselling Antipodean staff. As a pub this one doesn’t score well based on my visit, it’s too focussed on dining.

Recently refurbished, the Hare and Hounds has styled itself as an up-market country pub on the main road to Hungerford, just outside the village of Hatherdon on a busy junction. In the single, large, irregular-shaped bar there are new flagstone and wooden floors, two open fireplaces and various nooks and crannies to sit in. There is a wide-ranging and eclectic food menu, quite pricey but not quite in the gourmet bracket. I had kangaroo just for the novelty value, but it wasn't the best I've had. The atmosphere is cosy and friendly, but the staff, welcoming as they are, seem a bit at a loss, and there were very few people in, largely due to the remote location and high prices. There were 2 ales on - I had a pint of Seafarers which was in good condition, but again, not as good as it could have been. I'd be happy to come back if passing, and it's fine for a cosy place to spend a quiet evening (although not Mondays when it doesn't open at all).
