I somehow missed out on a return visit to the York Tap when in York last year but made the most of a change of trains in the city on Tuesday morning.
I can't think of a better station pub across the UK than this one. It has a lovely Victorian interior and an oval-shaped bar in the centre of the pub with 10 handpulls on each side of the oval. Even on a Tuesday morning, all 20 pulls were clipped with 18 cask ales and a couple of ciders.
Don't rely on Untappd to make your selection. I'd chosen what I wanted ahead of my arrival, only to find that the list was not quite up to date. Timothy Taylor beers occupy 4 of the handpulls - Landlord, Landlord Dark, Boltmaker & Knowle Spring. There's also generally some beers from Tapped Brew Co. This week, they had Jericho & Electric Work. The other 12 guests were North Riding Hazelnut Porter, Courier Awaken, Heathens: Cask Flag Series, Castle Rock Our House, Nightjar How To Drain Your Flagon, Wharfedale IPA & Citra, Three Acre Harvest Gold, RedWillow Hazy with a Chance of Idaho, Pentrich Soul Doughnut, Millstone Purple Hills Bitter, Colbier Tenor & Only With Love Bonza.
Ciders on handpull were Lilley's Raspberry & Lemonade & Hogan's Hazy Rays. Craft beers were Kirkstall Virtuous, Meanwood Maverick, Drop Project Slope, Brouwerij Haacht Super 8 Cherry & Bristol Beer Factory Black Gates.
Bar staff are happy to advise if you are struggling with a choice and the pub can be accessed from either the platforms or the street without requiring a train ticket. There is an additional outdoor (but undercover) seating area on the platform itself. If you're in York, it's worthy of a visit, whether you're taking a train or not.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about York Tap
Very quirky little building, looking like it has been transported from an Edwardian seaside resort, and thus somewhat out of place in a gap between other functional station buildings. Bow windows in the platform side and little cupolas above the outer corners on the taxi road façade. A suitably grand island bar has been installed, but many other features (such as the ceiling domes, tiled floor, decorative glazing and fireplaces) have been retained. All of the 20 handpumps appeared to be on during this visit, offering an outstanding range of real ales and ciders, including Bini Brew Co's Mean Wood Hop green-hopped beer (£4.70, unfined but clearly marked as naturally hazy). First class.

Situated at the end of Platform 3 but with an entrance from the street and no ticket barriers this is a popular real ale haunt. From the platform the metal exterior seating and the brightly painted exterior give the impression of a modern refurb but the interior is noteworthy with very traditional features,a lot of wood panelling and a railway feel. The circular island bar is attractive and its importand to walk around the discover the true ale range from the 20 pulls, not all of which will be clipped.
I had a brief time slot changing trains and didn't note all the ale options. There was a lot of Locale,BrewYork Viking IPA,Tapped Brew Toha,Verdant Light Bulb, Wishbone Tiller Pin,and a wide selection which maybe permanents from Timothy Taylor namely Landlord,Dark Mild,Golden Best,Boltmakers and Landlord Dark. I would say around 14 options in total at 9pm on a Wednesday.A negative note was a single barman who was overworked,a vast stack of glasses cluttering the bar and some impatient punters wanting an ale before the London departure.I guess I caught it at a bad time and will spend longer next time I'm in York.Great place to start or finish a crawl or maybe both !
