Situated on the main road from South Norwood to Penge, this is a decent single room Victorian era local's pub. The place clearly had a two bar layout in the past but has now been opened out, allowing the bare boarded room to wrap itself around the centrally positioned servery. The bar has a panelled counter and part of its bar back remains intact. To the left there are a couple of small tables served by standard chairs under some modern floral wallpaper and further back there is a space dedicated to a pool table. Button backed banquettes and high tables and stools can be found under the front windows whilst over to the right there is a mix of standard seating and a few comfier armchairs under striped wallpaper and a slot machine. There's not much in the way of décor, nor of original features, although I did spot a pane of glass above the front door which had a mitre image on it. Pop music played throughout my stay and there were a couple of screens showing muted sports coverage to the loud, sweary blokes sat around the bar. A sign explained that children must leave the premises by 19:00, but this was clearly being flaunted with a couple of them running around the bar close to 21:00. The pub has a decent raised front garden with lots of benches and a large but somewhat scruffy garden to the rear.
There are three handpulls on the bar, two of which were displaying turned pump clips when I arrived, leaving St Austell Tribute as the only ale option. A pint of this set me back £3.60 and it was in perfectly acceptable condition, served by the friendly landlord.
This place has clearly been looked after well by the current owner and I thought it was a comfortable enough place to enjoy a quick pint. A wider ale range would obviously be a big plus but I presume the demand simply isn't there. Not a destination pub by any means but it seems dependable enough and would be worth a quick look in passing.
