Sizzling Pubs are usually low-budget, malodorous and scabby; this one is at the low end of that spectrum. The layout remains as described by Blackthorn some 13 years ago, as is the décor which would also appear to date from before then. The car park requires you to book in, the seating at the front requires you to smoke as the smoking shelter is now decrepit and awash with smokers’ litter. There appears also now to be a dress code – unless you are shirtless, bearded and heavily tattooed you are unlikely to fit in. This probably explains the lack of enthusiasm with which we were greeted. There were 4 female staff hiding; we eventually found them and upset them by asking for drinks, a request which in itself generated resentment and rancour – at least I think that’s what the youngest barmaid said. The Sizzling signature stench of stale cooking fat was absent during this visit, possibly because all the doors and windows were wide open, or maybe it was masked by the family groups in the restaurant area. No real ale, and the solitary craft pump – Neck Oil – was off. That left the standard banal Sizzling range of keg insect waste without even the release of a cheap cider. Really, really not worth stopping.

A popular community estate pub on the main A37 on the southern outskirts of Bristol. The appearance is typical of many pubs built in the 60’s or thereabouts and is not particularly inspiring, but serves it’s purpose well enough. There’s a good size car park to one side and a few benches out the front, although being on the main road it’s not a particularly pleasant spot.

Inside it appears as though it may have had a recent refurbishment. As with the exterior, it’s all a little bland and generic, but again serves it’s purpose. The main bar area is a L-shape, with the rear part being down a few steps. To the left is another room with a pool table. The walls were painted in a mustard tone and the flooring was mostly red patterned carpet, with some grey lino tiles around the wood panelled bar counter. Seating was a mix of red bench seating around the perimeter, and lots of small tables and chairs. The rear area down the steps had a more contemporary feel to it with shelving built in to the walls holding vases and the like, and a trendy sort of wall mounted fire. There were a couple of plasmas at the front of the bar showing the tennis, although the sound was off.

I didn’t inspect the menu but most of the food offering seemed to be of the sizzling variety. There were various meal deals advertised such as a Mexican and a pint for £6.49 on Thursdays, along with burger, grill and curry nights on other days.

Beers on tap were 6X, Marston’s EPA and Bass and these were all being offered at the very reasonable £1 a pint as they apparently had “too many barrels”. Ciders were Blackthorn and Thatcher’s Gold.

Improved a lot since all the smokers have had to go outside to their rather nice new smoking shelter!

Only had Butcombe Gold on tap for ale drinkers on my last visit, but better than nothing I guess.
