On a recent Monday evening I walked through the door of MacConnells into a darts league match where 10-15 blokes were slinging arrows at a couple of boards. The pub is on a corner plot so there’s a door around each side that leads to two separate areas that are joined by an opening that the serving counter extends between. The dartboards and some raised seating are in one side and banquettes, tables and some DJ equipment are found in the other. Televisions throughout were airing F1 and Sky Sports Monday Night Football. There’s also an advertised pool table but I didn’t see it. I found the service to be very friendly, but only standard and premium keg were available alongside Neck Oil. I actually liked it in here and would pop back in again if passing.

A small, single room corner bar on the outskirts of the City Centre, MacConnells is friendly and welcoming. It makes a nice change from the bustle and dirt of the City, and there's a genuine welcome from the staff. Be prepared to discuss football, though, especially Celtic matters. Sadly there is no real ale, so despite the friendliness, I don't see my coming back too often, although I would be hapy to drop in for a swift half.
