Standing at a crossroads in the middle of nowhere, the Malt Shovel is definitely worth the walk from the centre of Wirksworth. There are four hand pumps with Marstons Pedigree on two, Sharps Doom Bar and Jennings Cumberland Ale on the others. Not the most inspiring selection of real ales, but in immaculate condition if the quality of the Cumberland was anything to go by. It was a quiet midweek lunchtime when I was here, so the landlord and the one other customer had plenty of time for a chat. The interior of the pub is nothing special, and the décor includes numerous photos of local scenes and trains. To say this is the best pub in Wirksworth may seem like damning with faint praise, but I would say the walk out of town is worth it, and not just for the exercise.
