This is a traditional pub built in local stone and set at an oblique angle to the road just above the bridge over the River Don which gives it its name. The river takes two right angle bends just here and there are fishing ponds in the apex, and an industrial museum (Wortley Top Forge, which would have been powered by the mill ponds back in the day) and miniature railway nearby - see www.topforge.co.uk. The pub looks out across the valley, which is wooded and very pleasant.
Once inside there are three rooms, with the larger room having been opened out to include a smaller one on the left, and these two are set up for dining, and the main bar counter is also here. The room on the right is designated as the tap room, and has a small section of bar counter, stone floor and walls that are partly bare stone, partly wood panelled. There is a fireplace with a stove (and another one in the remnant of a wall in the other room). Two real ales were available: Timothy Taylor Landlord and Bradfield Farmer's Blonde. The Landlord was not in the best of condition, but drinkable. On the wall of the tap room is an Ordnance Survey map dated 1891 at 25 inches to the mile, showing the village, river and railway line (now the Upper Don Valley Trail for walkers and cyclists). The pub is shown, with a small row of four or five cottages adjoining, which have been demolished at some time in the last 130 years. I imagine it would get quite busy here at weekends and holidays, as it's a very pleasant bit of countryside not far from the surrounding cities and towns.
