We'd passed by the Strathcarron Hotel earlier in the afternoon on the way from Lochcarron to Plockton. Unfortunately, the pub has recently changed its opening hours for the winter and now only opens from 4pm on just 2 days of the week (Fridays and Saturdays).
We returned under cover of darkness, nearly ploughing into an unlit wheelbarrow near the entrance. The pub car park sits alongside the platform of the local station and after leaving the pub, we did see what was presumably the last train of the night from Kyle of Lochalsh chugging along the loch in the direction of Strathcarron.
Just the single small room was open for drinkers, of which there were 4 others on our visit. Two appeared to be locals, with another couple also visiting.
The local Strathcarron brewery supplies the real ale here. The solitary ale was their Red Cow.
A quiet place. It's a shame that winter opening hours are so restrictive.

A railway hotel, alongside one of the quietest railway stations in the country. The village is also tiny, but with the bonus of a fairly new brewery nearby which produces some excellent real ales. It was no surprise to find only two customers in the bar at the time of my afternoon visit, though I wasn't expecting to find that one of them would be a West Ham supporter - here for a fishing holiday and unaware of the Hammers' lucky win the night before.
The barman was friendly, though fairly new to real ales, as he said he was meaning to try them but hadn't got around to it yet (being a Tennents lager man himself). There are two hand pumps, with Red Cow and Golden Cow from the Strathcarron brewery. The Red is an excellent beer and one I am looking forward to drinking again when next in these parts - according to the brewery's website they only supply local pubs.
