A pretty good early Victorian backstreet local, the building slightly odd in shape due to an unusual roof configuration. The garden has a children’s play area, and there is a carpark which looks like it’s publicly funded, but apparently isn’t. Also outside there are a couple of benches at the front which would have offered lovely views out over the valley, until someone put a building in the way. Inside, the main bar, formed by conjoining two original rooms, has parquet flooring which, by nature of the different ages and wear patterns, shows how the bar area has been reconfigured over the years. There is a 1960s front to the original open fire which provides both warmth and atmosphere, and there is a dartboard and pool table. A skittle alley is for hire at the back. Food is freshly cooked, basic pub grub with no frills and is good value. Four handpumps on the bar, one dry, one with Stan’s Cider and two with Wadworth’s beers – 6X and IPA. The beer was OK, not in perfect condition but nonetheless drinkable and enjoyable. A good local worth a visit if in the area and a cut above the nearest pubs the other side of the ring road.

Visited a couple of times recently on crawls and must say that it is a great improvement although it's still a locals pub. The welcome is always friendly as are the chatty locals. The ales were well-kept - but I can't remember what they were as we were well into our crawls by the time we reached the Beehive.

I worked behind the bar here for a short while many moons ago - it was a dive then - a true local bar for local people in the best tradition of Royston Vasey! However it has new owners and the rumour is that it is much improved. I won't rate it now but it is on my list of pubs to visit asap.
