Located slightly off the beaten track perhaps, but nonetheless just a couple of minutes drive from J1 of the M32, first impressions are that this looks like an unremarkable old coaching inn that could perhaps do with a little TLC, but once inside it’s clearly been renovated to a good standard, and whilst it perhaps lacks anything in the way of cosy olde worlde charm, it was nonetheless all tidy and up together. Food definitely seems to be the main focus though, with a “Please wait here to be seated” sign on a small table just inside the bar, most, if not all punters eating and even a couple of sponge cakes on the end of the bar counter.
Décor wise it’s a mix of traditional and contemporary with wood strip on the majority of the floor along with a large rug to the right, whilst the walls and ceilings had all been painted some sort of taupe shade. There were a few small beams on the ceiling that were presumably black at one time, but are now just taupe along with everything else. Wood panelling around the lower part of the walls was a similar colour but in a darker shade. A brick chimney breast was off to the right with a wood burning stove, and to the left a further dual aspect fireplace separated the main room from a smaller snug with exposed brick walling which looked a little cosier perhaps.
Beers on tap were Butcombe original and Hambrook Pale, whilst a third pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were a trio from Thatcher’s with their Gold, Dry and Haze. Overall, not bad, and the staff were all friendly, but the emphasis on food perhaps detracts from it somewhat if you’re just after a pint. That said, there is a very extensive patio area at the rear which would be a nice spot in the warmer weather.
