The Chequers is a 17th Century former Coaching Inn nestled in the back country lanes between High Wycombe and Bourne End.
The bar area is everything you’d expect in a pub of some character dating from this period. Large original Oak beams, a flagstone floor, quiet cubby holes and a wonderful original open fireplace. The only issue is that this section is not that large and it doesn’t take too many in to fill all the available seating.
Then you have to utilise what is known as lounge area which, although they’ve tried hard to blend it in with the bar area, being plain wooden floor , wooden features, open fire and low tables with leather sofas, it still give the feeling of a bolted on extension more resembling a function room.
It is a hotel and has 17 rooms and, although I have never stayed here, visitors to my workplace who have tend to find it a pleasant stay with more character than the plastic hotel chains that abound in Maidenhead and High Wycombe.
The pub does lead on food and there is usually a substantial menu available, to the extent that there are several chalk boards dotted around both the lounge and the main bar area. On the couple of times I’ve eaten here, it’s not cheap but the quantity and quality have been high.
On the beer front the bar has four handpumps, but I’ve only ever seen three on the go at any one time. During my last visit a couple of weeks ago GK IPA and OSH were on, but fortunately complemented by Smuggler from The Rebellion brewery, which was a well kept pint.
So in conclusion, this is another good hostelry in the back lanes of the Wooburn area and worth searching out if you are nearby..
