The Calder is a surprisingly large pub that has the feel of a Wetherspoons, but with televisions throughout for Sky Sports, and background music. The entrance leads to a thin strip of seating that runs along the front windows and then some steps lead down to a large split-level open plan seating area with a long bar counter that runs up the left-hand wall. For those less able there is a wheelchair lift for access to the main pub area. The bar supports standard keg alongside Birra Moretti and five hand pumps. During a recent Friday afternoon visit these were drawing Ossett’s Silver King, Bradfield Brewery’s Farmers Blonde, Abbeydale’s Moonshine, Harviestoun’s Bitter & Twisted and Sharp’s Doom Bar. We decided to have a spot of lunch, curry chips, chicken goujons and tortillas which were all very reasonably priced. This place was spot on as somewhere to stop off for a quick bite to eat and a pint to keep me happy.

The Calder is a large pub.
Once inside there is a narrow area to the front which has normal tables and chairs, the main room is down steps, this are is quite large and oblong shaped, the bar faces and the floor is bare boarded, there are tall tables and chairs opposite the bar and normal tables and chairs plus bench seating elsewhere, there is a slight raised area opposite the bar.
There were four real ales on,i had a drink of Acorn Barnsley Bitter which was a nice drink, the other real ales were Taylor Boltmaker,Stancill No7 and Fotheringham Best.
Food was being served and background music was playing.
I found this to be a decent enough pub to have a drink in.

This pub is much larger than you'd think from its frontage. A few tables and chairs in the windows at street level then a few steps down to the main area. This looks just like a JDW with very similar menus on all the tables. There's a few booths on a raised area to the right. Several muted TVs showing Sky News. They advertise a DJ at weekends and there's a dancefoor area with disco lights above, so I suspect it changes dramatically at night. 5 handpumps on the bar with 4 on. My pint of Naylor's Bitter was in good nick. It's worth calling in for the well kept beer, especially if you likes JDW's.
