This is a traditional village inn, slightly off the beaten track and unlikely to get too much in the way of passing trade. As such, it’s a bit of a local’s pub with just a handful of punters propping up the bar on a recent Saturday lunchtime visit, one of whom was effing rather a lot which I always think creates a rather unpleasant atmosphere, especially in a quiet pub when everyone can hear it and there are ladies present. Outside is a good sized garden as well as a covered smoking area with some leather sofas.
Décor wise, it’s quite traditional and with a minimal amount of work could be quite pleasant. There is much exposed stonework including a partition wall splitting the pub in to two halves, with a walk through at each end. Elsewhere the walling was painted wallpaper, cream at the top and maroon lower down and it was this that looked very shabby, with large sections of paint having peeled off to show the previous colour underneath. Something that could be easily fixed at minimal cost and a few hours work smacks of a landlord that takes no pride in the pub. There were a few black beams on the ceiling and a massive stone fire-place with a wood burning stove. A plasma was up on the wall showing the F1, and I thought this would have been better placed in the “public bar” half of the pub along with the darts board rather than in the lounge area. There were a few large speakers around and a notice board advertised a forthcoming Elvis night as well as a BT Sports fixture list.
The menu offered a selection of basic pub grub such as hunter’s chicken, sausage & chips, fish & chips, burgers, sandwiches and jackets for around the £6/£7 mark. My ham, egg & chips was a generous portion with plenty of chips and two eggs, although the ham was of the cheap processed variety rather than anything hand carved from a joint. For the price though, I guess it was fair enough.
Despite four hand pumps on the bar, two appeared unused and the Bass had run out leaving Doom Bar as the only option. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold & Thatcher’s Haze, which I’ve not seen on draught before. I think the character of this pub is likely to depend on who’s there at the time. With the sweary bloke at the bar on our visit, I didn’t really warm to it, but on another day it could easily be a friendly little local, although even the barmaid didn’t help by ignoring us as we left.
