Obviously not a pub in the traditional sense, but a bar on the left hand side of the new Grand Pier. According to the website the bar has a “pirate theme”, although I didn’t particularly notice that on my very brief visit. That said, I was more concerned with checking out the beer choice, so may have missed it.
I did spot a suspended ceiling with black tiles which seemed an odd choice, and a large projector screen although this was not in use. They’ve tried to create a bit of a cosy pub feel to the place with some dark wood partitions, but the wood was curiously shiny and just didn’t work somehow. It reminded me of those “village inns” you sometimes get in the middle of an airport.
On the plus side though, one side is all glass windows with a great view down the beach and there is also some outside seating which I’m sure would be a fantastic spot on a summer’s day.
The solitary beer on offer was their own “Grand Bier” although I don’t know who brews this. The only cider was Strongbow unfortunately. I can’t understand that – this is a major tourist attraction that is going to bring thousands of people to the area. They’re not tied to some PubCo so why on earth are they offering some bland fizz from Hereford instead of showcasing some of the region’s great ciders, such as Thatcher’s who are just a few miles up the road?
