One of a few Derby pubs near the railway station. The customers were a mix of visitors, some waiting for a train and locals. The pub has two slightly shabby rooms with high ceilings. The lights were a little too bright and there were only a few tables next to the walls. This all made it feel a little uncomfortable. On the other hand there was a strong community atmosphere. The bar staff were welcoming to visitors and enjoying banter with the locals. A good selection of cask beer was available and The Bounder from Leatherbritches was okay (NBSS 3.0). In another place this could be a ‘must visit’ pub. However with two other very strong pubs in the immediate area it falls to third place and I would only visit again if I had a short time between trains or was limiting a pub crawl to this side of Derby.

In the GBG but I struggled to enjoy myself, it’s a claustrophobic place over two fairly gloomy and unappealing rooms. My Leatherbritches was thick and I didn’t bother to finish it (NBSS 2) and a follow-up beer a couple of weeks later (Front Row Treacle) was also sub-par (NBSS 2.5). I definitely was in the same pub as the reviewers below…

A very fine ale house,close to Derby station and next door to the awful Merry Widows.The central corridor leads to the tap room to the right with traditional furniture,a fireplace and a long bench,while to the left is a larger seating area.It's a boozer and feels basic, a little worn in a good way.The star is the ale selection ,on my trip Leatherbritches Dovedale,The Bounder and Pinnacle along with Little Brewing The Panter Stout and Just Nipping Out,Hollow Stone Ajanta IPA and Sorbeto Mango IPA (outstanding,NBSS 4.5). The mix of styles and strengths along with lots of locales is noteworthy and the guv'nor is an engaging fellow,excellent on curry recommendations and full of helpful beer knowledge. 7 ales available on a Monday evening is another greaT sign,the crew sampled across the range and complemted the conditioning.
It would be a crime to miss out on this great boozer,a must visit in Derby.
