During a recent hot Saturday afternoon visit to the Edinburgh Castle the seating outside the pub was full, but the traditionally decorated inside was very quiet. Green banquette seating that runs along the front window is faced by the bar counter that is lined with black leather and gold stools that have seen better days. I found this strange as the fixtures and fitting felt like they had recently been given a new lease of life. A beer shelf with more stools runs up the right wall and behind the bar is a large dining type table as well as some more banquettes. There was a bit of funky background music playing. The bar supports three hand pumps, but one was unused and the other two were reverse clipped, so the draught options were craft lager, Estrella and Guinness. The summer lunchtime food menu was in operation with burgers and hot dogs available for £10 a pop. The bar staff were a bit conceited so I didn’t feel very welcome, and the lack of any cask just after opening on a Saturday afternoon isn’t great management. I thought this place could have been a lot better.

They've spent a lot of money renovating this pub and someone has to pay for it and it will be you. A surprisingly small front room where the bar is situated. A corridor at one side leads to a further room with mirrored walls and a further small seating area. Plenty of wood panelling around the place and a pleasant atmosphere. Definitely dog friendly as there were two in on my Friday afternoon visit. So far so good, now for the bad bit. A trainee barmaid who it would appear had never pulled a pint of cask in her life had been left behind the bar. I was served a just about drinkable pint of RedWillow Nelson that was flat as a witches... It made London beer look like it has big head. For this dubious pleasure I was charged £4.50, which is a bit steep even for around here.
I drank up and decided I needed a proper pint to get rid of the taste of the crap one, so I went around the corner to Cask, where I was served a great pint of Shiny Liberty for 50p less than in here.
Nice pub, glad to see it reopen, but crap beer and barstaff are going to cost it points

Paid a visit on Saturday evening. Two hand pulls for real ale, offering Edinburgh Castle Ale (brewed by Ringwood) and Magic Rock High Wire. The High Wire was superb, though a little on the steep side at £4.70 for two halves! There are also various keg options (including another Magic Rock beer) but having perused the menu while sat down we discovered Estrella (or something mainstream of that ilk) priced at well over £5 for 2/3 of a pint, so prepare to have your wallet emptied.
The pub itself is smaller than expected, with two rooms separated by a central bar and corridor behind. There is a room upstairs which I believe is exclusively for dining, though I did not investigate. Overall it's fairly smart, if dimly lit, and was rather busy. Hopefully some of that £4.70 will go towards sticking another 50p in the meter and turning the lights up a bit. Dogs appear to be welcome, either that or this one had made it past the bouncer undetected.
Nice to see an old pub reopened, I suspect its current incarnation is a far cry from what it would have been originally, but it's obviously popular. I wouldn't go out of my way to return, but may well call in again when visiting other pubs in the area.
