Called in at a quiet period, the first Monday of the new year, and the hand pumps on the bar were a bit depleted. I went for the Holts Sixex, which was ok but not as good as when I was in the Crown in Stockport a few weeks ago. But who's complaining when a 6% beer is just £4/pint! (In my previous review (below) from 2019 I was complaining about being charged £4 for two halves.) When in Manchester I always call in the Hare & Hounds a few doors up the street, so this was just an exploratory mission, to make sure I'm not missing anything. I can report that the background music (Tamla Motown and Northern Soul) is pretty good.

I enjoyed a good wander around this Holts pub dating from 1745. I thought the tiled exterior and ornate windows to be very interesting along with the bank of six pew like seating opposite the main bar. The young barmaid said that they were originally used for a shoe shine, whilst you had a pint back in the day. My theory is that it was much easier to read one of those large newspapers without disturbing anyone at the bar or of close vicinity.
There was also an upstairs bar along with more seating and a roof terrace. Five handpumps, Holts Bitter, IPA, Mild, Two Hoots Golden Ale and the guest was Bootleg Chorlton Pale Ale. My Chorlton was £4.60 a pint, there was also an advertisement on the bar for Holts Smooth at £2 a pint.

Appears to have been extended at some time into the adjacent building, aparantly formerly a barber’s shop. A fine old style if woody interior with traditional banquette seating, tables and chairs and some odd high seats opposite the counter, which look like ex-church parts. Six pulls four from Holts and two from Bootle 8 keg taps. Three more pulls in the extended part with more seating of a similar nature. Rather more expensive than the Hare & Hounds next door for the same beers.
