This has recently been closed for refurbishment and whilst it has retained it’s has original name I suspect that it’s image may have changed somewhat with a greater food emphasis and is now something of a bar/restaurant type establishment (it actually describes itself as a “Bar, Restaurant and Clubroom”) although it nonetheless still seems to attract large groups of youngsters who were noisily consuming trays of flavoured vodka on a recent mid-week evening visit.
It consists of a large open plan room with a long black bar counter on the left hand side. This had low hanging globe lamps above it and several bar stools along the front of it. Flooring is predominantly sanded wood with tiling around the bar. Much of the wall was bleached wood with some ceramic tiling at the rear. Seating was mostly long tables on a couple of different levels, with some booth seating along the right hand wall. A few plant troughs were in front of the large windows, along with a display case containing cocktail pitchers and shakers. Upstairs is another good sized room, although this was closed off on my visit. Whether this is for private functions, or opened on a weekend perhaps, I’m not sure. This included a cosier looking snug area at one end with plenty of pictures on the walls and Chesterfield sofas.
A waitress was stood inside the door ready to greet you, but this wasn’t a case of “wait here to be seated” and you were quite at liberty to make your way to the bar if you wanted. As I was planning on eating, I availed myself of her services and asked what beers they had. After reeling of a long list of continental lagers, I explained that I meant bitter to which she replied that she really wasn’t sure as she didn’t drink it. Not particularly helpful, although she was friendly enough.
Food wise, the menu offered a good choice of dishes and was divided in to sections such as wraps, pizzas, burgers and sharing platters as well as more conventional meals. Most of these were priced somewhere in the £8 - £10 range and my Chicken, Chorizo & Pesto Pappardelle in a creamy sauce with sun dried tomatoes and rosemary came in at £8.50 and was actually quite a pleasant dish and a generous portion, although it arrived alarmingly quickly despite the fact that I was advised when I ordered that they were very busy and there would be a longer wait than normal.
Unfortunately there were no ales on tap, real or otherwise, and I’m not even sure they had any in bottles. Ciders faired marginally better with Aspall’s Suffolk and Magner’s Golden Draught. This is very much a cocktail venue though, and menus on all the tables outlined an extensive selection as well as the flavoured vodkas mentioned previously.
