On a long cycling circuit of Cumbria, I'd identified the camp site behind this pub as my destination for this night, though I hadn't had a drink at the pub for more than 30 years. The camp site is set quite a long way back, past two rows of static caravans, which presumably give the trade here a necessary boost.
It was busy in the pub, though there was only one other tent sharing the field with me. Most people were eating, including a large pre-wedding party which seemed to consist of an extended family, all having a lovely time. There was not much space for drinkers, just two bar stools that were occupied by a couple of locals, and associated floor space by their dogs, plus a sofa that had no table upon which to place ones drink. I eventually found a table and was comfortable enough, though being charged a stonking £3.70 a pint for not very well kept beer was sufficient irritant that I never felt really relaxed here.
There were three beers and a cider among the five hand pumps, but the beers were so cold as to be rendered almost tasteless, not a difficult feat in the case of the house beer, which is brewed by Marstons. The remaining options, a toss up between Jennings Cumberland Ale and Thwaites Wainwright, reminded me of the choice facing the American electorate this autumn: given that you're going to end up with one or the other, which one do you find least objectionable?
