I was passing through Ennerdale Bridge on my cycle route from Eskdale to Borrowdale, and was surprised to find the pub open at just after 11am on a weekday, so I parked my bike and went in for a beer. This is a typical Lakeland pub, with two rooms at the front, the bar towards the rear and a further room behind. There are five hand pumps on the bar, with the ubiquitous Wainwright (justifiably, because Ennerdale Bridge is on the Coast to Coast Walk which Alfred Wainwright devised), Jennings Bitter and three local beers: one from Ennerdale Brewery just down the road, two from Bowness Bay. I went for the latter's Swan Black which was an excellent beer in very good condition. I liked it here: a proper pub with good beer, a real fire and no background music.
