One of a couple of pubs in the quiet village of Cockfield, I noticed a sign on the door stating that no pets were allowed. However, on entering, I was instantly jumped upon by Molly who was presumably the pub dog. Whether it was the dog from the Black Horse at Waterhouses she could smell, or perhaps the cat from the Black Lion at Wolsingham, I'm not sure, but this was a day where animals were seemingly attracted to me!

My visit here was far from comfortable. TVs in opposite corners were both in with the sounds competing. One had Now 80's playing tracks from Jane Wiedlin, Grace Jones, Chaka Khan & Fuzzbox, whilst the other had Sky Sports News on. Things could have been worse, as a large projector screen was not in use.

There is a dartboard on a raised area to the rear. Various trophies and shields could be found for a number of games, such as dominoes. Furnishings are red and the walls are painted quite vividly with red on the lower part and yellow on top. A few old black and white pictures of the local area added more of a homely touch.

The 2 cask ales were Doom Bar & Southwold Bitter. My Bitter was £3.60 for a pint and was in good condition. The cider was Magners.

Slightly set back from the road - I completely missed it when driving through the village and had to come back to look for it - this former GBG pub is a moderately sized community pub with a multi-roomed (though not necessarily original) layout. There's a pillar in the centre of the room, with the bar to the left. The furnishings and decor are traditional, with mostly carpeted floors, plush-covered banquettes and wooden tables; furniture polish was the dominant smell. Pop music was playing, and racing was on TV with the sound down. On the bar were two hand pumps, with Sharps Doom Bar and Tetley's Bitter. I had the latter, which was in very good condition.
