Group. This small London centric pub co now has quite a presence in the Balham area with its Antic acquisitions, as it also runs the Hagen & Hyde and the Cyclist on the High Road.
The pub underwent a refurb a couple of months ago and from what I could see when comparing and contrasting with previous reviews, apart from a lick of grey paint and new signage on the exterior, and some general smartening up and removing the former Antic shabbiness inside, they seem to have largely left the key features alone and a lot of the former bowling décor and wood panelling is still in place. On the bar front I think this has also been remodelled and although I couldn’t tell for certain as it was quite busy and difficult to see the whole bar , but I think there is now the usual Urban Pubs focus on the craft keg taps with the usual Gipsy Hill Hepcat, Two Tribes Campfire, Brixton Reliance, Siren Lumina and Beavertown Neck Oil all in attendance. Still a couple of ale pumps in operation and Sambrook’s Wandle and Twickenham Grandstand were on for my visit.
So maybe not the ale offering there was under Antic, but this is still a proper traditional pub, unlike the two Urban offerings on the High Street and I found it quite comfortable, especially as they have smartened up the exterior drinking space to the back as well.

A remarkable interior now celebrated under Antic ownership and well worth inspecting. It's all wood panelled walls, parquet flooring, across a nesting of rooms in an unspoiled homage to membership clubs which served the local community. The bar is to the left, then a rear snug,a midships section with it's own fireplace before winding around to a large rear dining area with access to the beer garden and a smarter front section in green velour. The sountrack of classic rock was spot on and really enhanced the visit.
The kitchen was turning out very reasonably priced pub grub such as sausage and mash £9.50 and a great sausage roll slice at £2.50 proving a perfect pub snack. The ale range of Sharp's Doom Bar and Sea Fury ,Wimbledon Copper Leaf and SW19 (musty,NBSS 2.5) along with regulars Voldens Pale and Session let the show down a bit but pop in for a quick one and have a squint about,it's worth it.

This place dates from 1893 but has only been a pub since 2006, run by Antic and boasting a CAMRA heritage listing of *.
Well described on both CAMRA’s sites, there’s a rambling five-room layout, with much dark wood field panelling to the walls, almost all cells home to a regimental crest, much like the former interior of Oxford’s Lamb & Flag with its college crest flummery. There are plenty of aged sporting accoutrements, such as old tennis clubs and golf bats, further knickknacks such as an old American clock and mixed prints. Customers were on the younger side, probably local professionals, one with a baby in a pram an hour after the little treasures should have been evicted.
A refreshingly different ale choice from Young’s south London tyranny, with Wimbledon’s Copper Leaf, Sharp’s Sea Fury and Volden’s Session and Pale at just £4.50 a pint, served by a friendly barmaid and on excellent form.
This is a very nice pub with a good choice of affordable cask where I could have spent some time; a must-visit if in the borough of Wandsworth.
