Community owned village pub a couple of miles outside Richmond, to get there the Little White Bus comes this way as well as there being a walk either down to the river or along the lanes from Richmond. One square room with counter to the side leads through to an extension and patio with views of Swaledale. Eight hand pumps with a range of beers from smaller breweries largely from Yorkshire and the north east on my visit, kegs from Sam Smith and Marstons, there were also four draught ciders. Plenty of CAMRA awards on one wall including their national pub of the year certificate. The quality of the bears this out, it also has great service although the decor is rather plain.

Rescued and refurbished in 2010 after a successful community buy-out, this pub was CAMRA Pub of the Year for Yorkshire for 2016. Put to multiple uses, including The Little Shop, this is a real community local. At the time of our visit, most of the customers were tourists like us, though I did see some villagers bringing their surplus apples to be crushed for juice (or was it for cider) on the terrace at the back. Highlight for me, of course, was the range of half a dozen hand pumps, something you don't often see in an out-of-the-way place like this. I'm pleased to report therefore, that the Rudgate Ruby Mild and Wensleydale Falconer were both in very good condition. This was our refreshment stop when cycling between Northallerton and Grinton, and I think we'll make a point of doing the same again next time we come to these parts.

Extremely friendly atmosphere, the locals always say hello and goodnight, amazing views from the back beer garden especially in summer! Myself and my partner's favourite pub! Brilliant!
