Major Oak Is a post war former Home Ales pub in the back streets of Arnold that is set back a little from Rolleston Drive. The pub is a classic estate style affair with a back room with pool table that I did not enter and a front bar room with tables and chairs and not much else. Decor is the loser in this room as it has a resemblance to the post-apocalyptic wasteland on planet of the apes and clientele to march. There has been some attempt over the years to cover over the walls with the tackiest of cheap paper thank has quite frankly had the same effect as adding fairy lights to a brothel, you can’t polish a turd. The only way I can describe this place is a total flea pit. I’m not sure what stank worse in here the greasy chavs drinking in the bar area, the soiled carpets and furniture, the decomposing landlord (Jesus Christ, never has a bar of imperil leather ever set foot near his body) or the pint of Chestnut Mild I was served. Maybe the landlord didn’t (probably couldn’t) read the instructions on the label on the pipe cleaner bottle and instead of adding the stated dose decided to chuck the whole lot in for good measure, probably thinking that will give it a good clean. A good clean his pipes probably got to but unfortunately so did my insides. At three quid a pop for the mild (obviously the only option aside from john smiths) I would have been better spending my money on communal tub of shower gel for him and his customers and to be fair would probably have been a tastier option. Up there as one of the clickiest places I have visited for a long time, If you favour john smiths at two quid a pint and have a bit of a liking for you sister then you will feel right at home in here. If however you regard comfort, hygiene, and place to grab a beer that doesn’t have the potential to cause a significant physical or mental health hazard I suggest you give this place the widest of births. I believe the expression rather stick my head in a gas oven with a blowtorch pretty much sums up my feelings on this place. Just don’t go.

The Major Oak is a large pub that used to be an Home Ales tied house.
The pub still has two rooms and shows sky sports there was only one real ale on the bar which was Sharpes Doom Bar which was ok .
