This is an old Georgian Watney's pub that closed in 1985 and incredibly didn't reopen until 2008, under the aegis of Gordon ...king Ramsay, which explains the smart casual dress code; we were suitably attired.
A first in here the other night, notwithstanding prior knowledge that this hardly qualifies as a pub anymore, rather I gather it may be demolished to make way for HS2. Or not.
A very spacious and commanding building, situated in between the intimidation and mayhem that is Camden Town and the croesian wealth of Regent's Park. The tiled exterior looks traditional but that's about all that remains, that and an attractive lantern that may have once been situated over a billiard table. Aside from this there's some appealing ceiling mouldings. On entering, you are confronted with a PC-topped lectern to check your name and reservation details if made but if you ask, you can go and sit on a stool at the metal-topped bar; I gather you can get drinks-only table service if you so wish. The low lounge furniture towards the front seems better geared towards drinking, though probably a cocktail.
Bare boarded throughout, there's a raised area to the rear for dining and more seating downstairs where there appeared not to be any diners, and on a Saturday at around 9.30 pm. Perhaps they were put off by the smell of greasy lamb fat, redolent of a kebab shop emanating from the kitchen next to the lavs with gent's cubicles that were really a bit scuzzy; do they ever get checked? There was at least one TV, for reasons that elude me and a muted jazz soundtrack played over the gramophone, drowned out by the occasional thumping of bar staff knocking cocktail shakers for customers who all seemed to come from the US.
No ale, rather a chrome fount for dispensing a couple of craft ales and premium lagers. You order and your drink arrives with a bill in a personalised York & Albany cardboard wallet, presumably one per round. My pint of Maltsmith's American IPA weighed in at £6.75, though this in part can be explained by the 75p service charge, despite it being pulled just inches from my face. 'Craft' ale eh? The craft of relieving the gullible of large amounts of cash. Still, temperature aside it didn't taste bad, though at these prices Watney's Red Barrel would've tasted good. For the record, there were five craft - sorry, silly money - beers in the chiller cabinet.
We finished our pints and I paid the bill (you do that sort of thing here) and left. This is an expensive curiosity and although I'm glad I've been, I won't be returning.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about York & Albany
This restaurant, bar and hotel is run by the Gordon Ramsey group; so, knowing that, you will probably have a good idea of what to expect. Plush, tastefully appointed, bar with a central servery and a light airy feel. Attractive patio area with a few tables to the front. Table service unless seated at the metal-topped bar counter. Gentle background music. Dining rooms somewhere out of sight. Small pizza deli / takeaway to one side. Some bottled beers available, but only Meantime London Pale Ale (£4.85) and Bitburger on tap. So, almost falling off the end of the pub spectrum, but if you are looking for a civilised drinking spot in upmarket surroundings within walking distance of the hustle and bustle of Camden High Street then I suppose it might be for you (if you can afford it...).
