A large street corner pub not far from the station, with two rooms. I went in the lounge bar to the right of the entrance. This was clearly adapted from a different layout some time ago, if the fireplace in the corner is anything to go by. The bat features six hand pumps, but these were doubled, so featuring only three beers, and of these only two were on: Wychwood Battleaxe and Marstons Pedigree, with Jennings Tom Fool "on next". I wasn't in the mood for a beer as challengingly named as Battleaxe, so had the Pedigree, though as so often these days found myself regretting the excellent, flowery and sulphurous beer of yesteryear while drinking the bland nothing it has now become. The landlord was very friendly and this would be an ideal place to while away half an hour between trains, were it not for the fact that the Station Inn is 100 metres closer to the station.

This is a massive pub with two large rooms. The front bar often has a DJ playing very loud music at weekends. The rear bar is much quieter and feels more like a tap room. THere's a large number of handpumps on the bar, but on my visit only Hobgoblin was actually on although another pump had a turned round clip. The Hobgoblin was a good pint as well. It was pretty quiet (apart from the loud music) considering it was a Saturday night, but there is a lot of high profile competition just up the road. It's OK in here and I may well call in for one again, when on my way back to my hotel.
