From the outside a fine old building in an interesting location overlooking the unnavigable River Trent at Swarkestone Bridge. However these days it's a Marston's Two for One diner, and the internal decor leaves few traces of original features. In fact the interior is vast and rambling ,with many different sections mostly taken up by diners. The best part of the pub is close to front entrance off the lane where there are two large bay windows, this is where drinkers gather with a mixture of large leather banquettes and bench seating. There are some flag stones but much more corporate carpeting and all tables are numbered so you can't escape the possibility of your neighbour eating even if you just want a beer.Even a fine looking fireplace looked unused and unloved.
At leat there were five handpumped ales from the Marston's portfolio of breweries ,on my trip Old Empire,Hobgoblin,Pedigree,Pacific Gem Single Hop and Jennings Red Rascal,£2.83 and in very good nick. The food offering was vast and the specials also feature in the 2 for 1 pricing, but I would expect foodservice to be inplay here.
There is a huge garden over the lane which runs down to the surging river, with the rapids just the otherside of the bridge, and external dining is catered for.
A large opportunity missed here by Marston's ,this place is crying out for a sympathetic internal remodelling. At least you can console yourself with a decent real ale choice.

Always been a good place to drink and eat with a great garden with tables to sit and drink and watch the world go by enjoying the view by the river
