I made a point of coming here after reading Ian Mapp's review below, and I wasn't disappointed. Apparently his serendipitous visit on a Monday coincided with the Monday club, which comes out on the bus for the afternoon (I assume from Derby, though it could be Swadlincote, I suppose). My visit was a much lower key affair, with just one customer, whose 30th birthday it was; he was drinking in preparation for a cricket match later in the day, and we discussed whether this was a good idea. Apparently cricket balls are more predictable than 20 stone rugby forwards, even after three or four pints (the batsman, I assume; surely rugby players drink more than that?).

This is a heritage pub interior, with no major alterations since the 1950s, apart from the curved settle near the fireplace - similar to the Holly Bush at Makeney - having been cut back to just one cushion. But this is a beautiful pub nevertheless and worth a ride out from Derby on the hourly bus.

The lass serving was super friendly and tried her best to pull enough of the guest beer from Church End Brewery through and throw it away until it was in decent condition, which it was (though still not entirely clear: NBSS 3.5-ish); the Bass was very good (NBSS 4, £4.20/pint). I promised to tell some of my Bass-loving friends to call in, and I nearly missed my bus from having to explain why the Bass wasn't 10/10. And then the birthday boy wouldn't let me leave by the front door because it was "bad luck". As I walked out the back door I said, "I can't believe I'm doing this!"

Maybe I'll come back on a Monday.

One of the best pub visits of the year..... on a Monday Lunch.

I aimed for the Staff of Life - but this is closed on a Monday. Despite being a hotel.

Their loss is the Chequers gain, as they open all day on a Monday - opening at 3pm on other midweek days.

Entering on a miserable day about 1pm, I couldn't believe how packed it was. Glasses instantly steaming up from the roaring coal fire, it was a battle to get to the bar. But a nice battle, filled with friendly banter from other patrons and the landlord.

We couldn't have been made more welcome if they tried.

Low ceiling main bar with an unexplored other room on the opposite side. Facilities outside. They weren't doing food but the cobs are to die for. Probably called Batches or something else here.

Beerwise - Bass in top condition.

Tough to leave! The people make pubs and they were great here.
