Named after a local fiddler James Scott Skinner, this pub is found on the main road about a mile from the town centre. It looks though it would have originally been a pair of cottages although there is little regarding the actual history of the pub to be found anywhere.
The outside was dominated by large banners advertsing food deals and I got the impression that mid-budget diners are the pubs hardcore customers. They also open at 8am for breakfast. Main courses range from £5 bar snacks to £20 for the finest steaks and all the trimmings.
The fairly quaint but quite smalll main bar is on the right of the main entrance with a further room off to the left withn fire and TV. These areas have standard pub décor and furnishings, nothing fancy but comfortable enough with mountain and lake panoramas adorning the walls and a few statuettes of the pub’s namesake and his trusty fiddle.
According to the local CAMRA magazine North Sea Ale, the pub sells Real Ale however I did not come across any hand pumps and had to resort to the more mundane keg Belhaven Best. Whether there is a bar at the rear of the pub I don’t know. A corridor leads to a rear section which I took as being a dining area but there appeared to be a function going on so I didn’t venture this far.
Judging by my initial brief visit, it wouldn’t be a pub that I would use on a regular basis but I would perhaps have needed a second visit at a busier time to get a proper feel for the place. If nothing else, you can sneak in for a quick pint whilst the Mrs does the weekly shop in Morrisons over the road.
