Much as I recalled from 10 years ago, full of RATs and railway memorabilia. It was the penultimate pub of an almighty and messy crawl. Whatever I had (Untappd says Rat Brewery Ratella) I deemed sub-GBG standard (NBSS 2.5). The front end of the loco remains in the garden and looks like it has received a lick of paint in the not-too-distant past. Shame about my serve, as it’s a pub I like.

Obviously been some management changes here – my end-of-crawl visit found a pub much cleaner (whilst still retaining its fairly simple alehouse feel in the front bar) and much better beer with tasting notes included – more like the pub I was promised in 2010 but didn’t deliver. My choice of Blue Monkey Infinity was in good form. Also some proper ciders available. No TVs in here - it’s a proper drinkers pub. The eclectic railway memorabilia remains, now including the startling installation of a Class 37 locomotive cab in the garden! I’d make sure to prioritise this one next time. Rated 8.5

September 2010
The ‘one you see from the train’ and quite hyped but I must say I was very much underwhelmed. Lots of ale was available but the quality was decidedly iffy, one excellent, one mediocre and one that was, frankly, off. Perhaps I should have gone for the impressive selection continental keg and Belgian bottles instead. The pub is laid out over two rooms and quite scruffy inside. Inevitably there’s railway memorabilia amongst the décor. I whiled away the time with a few games of arrows on the well-frequented dart board. Not one I’d be rushing back to, based on this visit.

NB – between my visit and posting this review it appears that there has been a change of licensee/re-decoration. Which might explain (though not excuse) some of the above. Rated 5

Another magnificent pub close to Derby station,it's a large quite grand building with a diesel engine cab in the beer garden.Internally there is a lot of heritage ,the main tap room is left ,while the square lounge to the right has it's own servery and handpumps.Railway ephemera is everywhere ,it like a museum and the heritage features are preserved well.
We based ourselves in the tap room seated around a banquette opposite the bar and this room contains the beer list which on our trip was Castle Rock Harvest Pale,Nothing But Flowers and Preservation with guests Bang the Elephant Tagged,Abbeydale Coconut Maccaroon,Toreside Azacca,Burton Bridge Burton Porter and a very good Howling Hops Troplcal Deluxe (NBSS 4.5).
Despite being owned by Castle Rock ,I applaud the choice of top quality guest ales offering a wide choice of styles and strengths all seemingly in great nick.
An absolute must visit ,you could stay here on a long session if it wasn't also adviseable to visit the nearby Victoria and Smithfield if top real ale is your game.

Excellent pub, great beer selection and wonderful railwayana. For an afternoon out with old friends it's the perfect venue with nothing to dislike, other than perhaps the roadworks outside!
