One of a small chain of upmarket bijou hotels, this rather splendid Georgian house still serves as a pub in many respects though fine dining and a superb location in Wiltshire’s less well-travelled countryside are its main selling points. It remains part of the Marquess of Bath’s estate and is convenient for Longleat while being far enough away not to have been spoiled by grockles. The drinking bar is entered through the side door, while the larger dining room enjoys the more formal front door. The bar is square, has a low beamed ceiling, is traditionally decorated in rural style and has a timber floor and an open brick fireplace. There are also various benches and tables outside at the front and side from which to enjoy the views over the countryside. The young staff were engaging and friendly, there were dog biscuits on the bar and there were no electronic distractions. On draught were Hornings Ale, Stone Daisy’s Park Bottom and Butcombe Original, all in perfect condition, though prices were slightly higher than average for the area. The Park Bottom in particular is worth a mention, probably the best pint I’ve had for quite a while. The keg range was 1664, Guinness, Beckford, Poretti, Butcombe Tall Tales, Goram IPA and Ashton Press cider. We didn’t eat, but it’s worth noting that they have multiple awards for food quality. It’s not basic pub grub, though, and the prices reflect that. Well worth seeking out, and I’d be very happy to spend a night or two here.
