Stopped off here on a Bank Holiday Monday in order to get a bite to eat and found ourselves the only customers in a bar empty save for the landlord and his young son. Apparently they had a big party on the Sunday night and the landlord was still tidying up at 2pm the following day.
Despite the odd atmosphere we ordered some of the reasonably priced food and I enjoyed a pint of Itchen Valley Green Jackets (apparently Adnams was also available, but the other bar was shut, so I couldn't inspect the pump clips). The food, advertised on chalkboards outside as home cooked, was pretty good, with decent portion sizes and lovely homemade chips.
Despite fairly bland and standard pub furniture and decor, it does have one feature that must make it unique - a carpeted toilet!
The pub seems to serve the community well, with posters promoting a charity cycle ride to Arnhem and a back room full of dart and pool trophies. It's a shame that we didn't get to experience this side of the place, but the landlord made us feel welcome, even if it seemed like we were intruding somewhat.
