Another one I haven’t done for years and again not much obvious change beyond some refreshing. It’s a very well-maintained place and nicely inviting. A rather large amount of ales on for the area I thought (11, was it?) and indeed my Brampton Stout was below-par (NBSS 2.5). I may have got unlucky but I wonder whether it’s a case of quantity over quality here.
September 2011
Seeing this place in the Good Beer Guide lured me out of the comfort zone of Chesterfield town centre and off towards Brampton’s backstreets. This is a large corner boozer that became Brampton brewery’s first tied outlet a couple of years ago and has clearly been completely overhauled from what it was previously. Eight ales on the go, including offerings from Brampton, Raw, Brew Co and Everards, with a couple of real ciders also on. I tried Raw Summer Ale and the delicious Brew Co Full Nelson, both of which were in excellent shape. The sighting of Everards, plus some of their literature, indicates that this a ‘Project William’ pub, where Everards take over and do up a failing pub and then let it out to small breweries/operators in return for a small tie.
As I crossed the proverbial threshold I was struck by the attractive stained glass ‘strong of arm’ illustration, which is also visible behind the bar. The interior has a main bar as you enter, with an area at the rear which had a quiet TV showing the footy results coming in and some nicely-appointed snugs which were taken up by diners chowing down the impressively cheap pub grub. The interior décor is still bedding in a bit but is well done, with wooden flooring, some dark green leatherette banquette seating with stools. Pictures of old Brampton adorn the walls plus there’s a dartboard which is always good to see. Assorted Breweriana in a glass cabinet provided a couple of minutes of distraction and adds a needed historical ambience. There’s also a rear garden area that has some grass and a couple of tables, which looks decent but could really take off with a little extra - some flower baskets perhaps? Brampton and Everards should be applauded for getting this place to the state it’s currently in, this place is certainly worth the walk out of town if you’re feeling up to it. Rated 7

This is the local CAMRA branch POTY and it is not difficult to see why. A very impressive line up of ten real ales and six craft keg pumps dispensing a good variation of beer styles and strengths.
There is a focus on the local Brampton Brewery beers, but with only three on the ale pumps, this left a choice of seven other brewery products, including Everard’s Tiger, due to the Project William tie up. As it happened I ducked the Acorn Brewery Gorlovka Imperial Stout at 6% and went for the more sensible 4.5% Brampton Brewery Stout as I thought it would be rude not to try one of theirs, and it was perfectly fine.
I wasn’t sure what to make of the interior decor on first entering, clearly clean and modern in one way, but giving an initial feeling that you had stepped back in time to a 1970’s boozer, but I have to say I did warm to the William Morris wall paper and think it’s probably better enjoyed and comes into its own on a dark evening when there are a few in and the lights are on.
But the main attraction here is the impressive beer range which is complemented by the knowledge and friendliness of the team behind the bar. And with several other decent options nearby it makes a bus journey out of Chesterfield to visit almost compulsory.
One thing to add, that seems to have been missed in previous reviews is that as well as the benches to the front of the pub, there is an additional enclosed outside courtyard area, accessed by the door at the back of the pub near the toilets.

This is a fairly substantial roadhouse pub in a none-too-appealing area and a fair trek from Chesterfield proper; it’s a Project William pub courtesy of Everards, linked though not exclusively to the Brampton brewery.
As described below, the interior is large and slightly trendified, with either a carpeted or modern boarded floor; there’s a trendy patterned bar front, décor in the form of random black and white photos.
There are 10 pumps, my Ashover Three Horseshoes was £2.03 a half though rather dull; I couldn’t finish it.
This place may find favour with fans of Brampton beers which may justify the trek, but I didn’t warm to this place.
