Old and still traditional pub behind the castle, flagstoned floor, stone walls, dry hops, real ales & large outside space

Close to the river and bridge. Enter to a large front room following the street, over two levels. It’s lightly modernised inside with light painted walls, scrubbed wood tables and a semi-rustic vibe featuring dried hops and an upright piano. Lovely garden out back with super castle views. Five pumps with five on; Wye Valley Toros (NBSS 3.5), Butcombe Original and Europa, Kingstone Classic and Llandogo Trow (warm and over the hill NBSS 2 on Mrs Quinno’s first half but much better (3) second time round; no pull through from the previous night, clearly – shoddy). Four boxed ciders also. Quite a nice feel, shame the ale was a bit hit and miss; just pull through a third of last night’s pump slops – not hard! 6.5

Great location next to Chepstow Castle this pub is popular with diners. On entering seeing the walls absolutely covered with pump clips filled me with hope after the last couple of pubs with limited choice. And with good reason. 5 beers on offer including GWB Maiden Voyage, Kingstone brewery Llandogo Trow ale, Brew Monster beer Co. Leviathan IPA and Mephisto IPA. I went for one of the IPA's and it was excellent. Well worth a visit.
