The Tawny Owl is located just of the A66 to the south of town, so I wasn’t surprised to find a food led pub with a large car park, which is at the rear. The entrance, also at the rear, opens into the bar area with a tile floored seating area to the right and a wooden floored seating area up the left that is faced by a wooden serving counter on a flagstone floor to the right. Some ceilings have old wooden beams which sit well with the many pictures and paintings of the local area through the ages. There are also some wildlife pictures, and a few mirrors are thrown in for good measure. The large, carpeted front of the pub has a couple of fires and lots of seating that felt more aimed at dining, as the busy tables during a recent midweek lunchtime visit demonstrated. This is a food led pub so don’t visit expecting to watch the match, however there was some very low background music playing. On the bar was a premium range of keg alongside Beavertown’s Neck Oil and the five hand pumps were alternated with Doom Bar and Landlord clips. Being lunch time, I went for a brisket sandwich that came with chips and a little pot of gravy for £11.50. It was a bit dry so I would have appreciated a bigger pot of the brown stuff. I found the service to be very polite, but the draught selection doesn’t warrant the trip out of town for those just looking for a decent pint.

I like The Tawny Owl , the beer is always good and the service always friendly. The food is fine , maybe not that inspired but it's tasty. Good ambience. Well worth a try
