Food-dominated pub that is the only pub in the small village of Painscastle.
I believe this pub has been closed for a good time, but we arrived to find a cat sat on the bar. Whether this is the same cat that was mentioned in the only previous review over 9 years ago, I'm not sure. But the cat did still seem to be alive!
Butty Bach & Doom Bar are the ales here, whilst they also had a real cider, which was Weston's Family Reserve. Having had this already in nearby Builth Wells, I opted for the Robinson's Flagon cider instead.
We were seated at the far right-hand end of the pub in an area adjacent to tables laid out for breakfast. So, presumably the pub is still doing B & B accommodation.
Staff were friendly enough, but the overall feel of the place was of a restaurant utilised by an upper class clientele, with a couple of real ales and a cider. Not really a village local, unless the feel changes later in the evening when the diners have gone home.

Large rural inn serving the village, presumably a row of cottages amalgamated. The interior is knocked through, with the carpeted right hand areas reserved for dining, with drinking to the flagstone centre and left, which also has a TV and (apparently unused) dart board. Food available, home-cooked pub grub with portion sizes that’d make Geoff Capes sweat. Two ales on which regularly rotate, with Wye Valley Butty Bach semi-regular. Condition of the ale is good but unfortunately is served near-freezing. Thatcher’s Heritage cider also available. Owners are friendly. Pub cat that sits on the bar observing the goings-on. Log burning stoves add a nice element of warm cosiness. Accommodation available.
In the context of rural Powys, this is a decent place.
