This was a wild card for us, as we had just got off the X17 bus from Chesterfield and planning our walk to Ashover. Luckily enough we only had a 5min wait for this pub to open. The interior of this country pub consisted of an oak beamed front lounge and bar, which was recently recarpeted throughout and freshly painted. There was also a side room around the back which was close to the kitchen. five ales on handpump, which were fairly mainstream, disappointing, I was expecting to see some local ales such as Peak ales. The choice was GK IPA, Abbott, Castle Rock Screech Owl, two from Titanic, Iceberg and Plum Porter. So I went for the Plum Porter, which was in excellent condition. They also had a choice of three ciders, Thatchers, Rosies and a local one which looked interesting Ashover Summer Berry.
The new owners, of this freehouse have only been here for three weeks after running the Old Poets Corner in Ashover, for several years. The new manageress was friendly and welcoming and told us the emphasis is on their ales and good food. I thought this was a nice touch when she told us the chef takes meals across the road to an elderly couple along with half a Guinness. The music was also a bit loud on our arrival, which in my opinion spoilt the ambience of the place, they did turn it down after a while though.

A village inn with an emphasis on food, but there are also three real ales on hand pumps with an interesting choice. On my visit these were Buxton Moor Top, Dancing Duck Nice Weather and Oxfordshire Triple B. It was very quiet in here on my Monday lunchtime visit, with just one customer propping up the bar. It was so noisy, with loud and very bad cover versions of 60s "classics" playing that no one heard me come in, and it took a couple of minutes to get served. The main bar is a moderate sized room with white painted walls and black beams. There's a dining room further on to the right of the bar which was decorated differently, but I didn't explore any further. It was quite pleasant here, or would have been without the music, and the beer was in good condition. It would be possible to combine this one in a crawl with the Ashover pubs, as it's only a mile to the village, or there is a bus stop just outside if you don't fancy the walk.
