Lion & Pheasant is a hotel with a bar that is open to non-residents, as most are these days. The wooden floored L-shaped bar area has an L-shaped serving counter on the left-hand wall where Cruzcampo and another premium lager were available alongside Guinness and a cider. There are also four hand pumps, three of which were drawing Ludlow’s Gold, Three Tuns Brewery’s Goldmane and Westons Rosie’s Pig Rhubarb while the forth stood unused. There’s seating across the front wall and up the right towards the rear where there’s a step down to seating by an impressive fireplace where some hotel guests were unwinding. The television was off and I think this was the only pub I visited during the World Cup that wasn’t showing it. The service was polite, but there are better atmospheres to be had nearby.

Nothing wrong with the drinks but £5 for a bacon butty or £12 for a burger is a bit steep. Still, I didn't come here to eat so as a place to drink its ok.

Fairly recently gastrofied with lots of hefty wooden dining tables and chairs. It's all a bit hotel reception alike now, which is what part of it is of course. The good news is that there were two handpulled beers on the bar, both locally brewed. My pint was in good nick and Ms CAMRA enjoyed her red wine. She really liked the place, but I thought it was a bit too much of a hotel bar. Still if I can drink real ale in a pub she likes then I suspect we'll be back.
