A quite splendid and somewhat idiosyncratic pub in an equally splendid 17th century grade II-listed building, even if it has been knocked about a bit. As described earlier, there is a room either side of the entrance corridor, a back room with excellent views, and a smart restaurant in an extension to the rear of the little bar. Outside there is a patio to the side, which actually looks more like a frontage, and nice terraced gardens down the hill behind. It still feels vey much like a locals' pub and hasn't gone over-touristy. A good and changing selection of ales were on offer, although several carried house branding and it was difficult to establish where they were from. A 4% Ruby Ale was very nice indeed. Others included examples from Rudgate, Crafty Monkey and Theakstons but apparently they change regularly. A good pub but beware the rather restricted opening times.

June 2014 update
some good news, some bad....
one more hand pump... four with Greene King products, only one with Rudgate, quality still good but......
The emphasis seems to have moved more towards food (& gin - see website) than before.

an excellent, old, stone built pub nestling at the bottom of Nidderdale. Entering via a short panelled corridor there is a pool room to one side and a comfortable lounge to the other. The bar and counter are found at the end of the corridor and to the left is a small seating area with bareboards, panelling with drink related quotes painted on, and a view over the dale. A door leads out from here to a garden. At the back of the building is a dining room called the Green Room. The bar area has a flagstone floor and more panelling plus four handpumps serving beers from Marston Moor and Rudgate, both breweries located further down river where it flows round Marston Moor on its way to York and the sea. This bar area has a drinking shelf and some tall stools but is basically a space for vertical drinking. Beer quality is excellent and in addition to the ales there are a number of standard UK kegs including one called Falstaff which is a new one on me, plus Tuborg, Pilsner Urquell and an Italian eurolager. The tankard bedecked bar and a profusion of notices hint at this being a vibrant village local. The menu and food looked good but I didn't try it and the staff and customers were friendly.
